Shadhinota
Stambha is the place where Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Delivered his
historical speech on 7th march 1971. With his speech, Bangladeshi Nation got
the enthusiasm for our great Liberation War in 1971. To recognize the
historical memory, this Stambha was made.
The Suhrawardy Udyan of the capital Dhaka of Bangladesh is historical place. Many significant incidents took place in this place. On March 7, 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his historical speech in this ground after Yahya Khan postponed the national assembly on March 1 of the year. In his speech Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman asked the people of Bangladesh to prepare themselves for Liberation War of Bangladesh.
The war broke out on March 25, as the Pakistan Army of occupation cracked upon the Bengali population of the then East Pakistan. And after a nine-month-long liberation war Bangladesh won its freedom from Pakistan.
On December 16, 1971, the commander-in-chief of East Pakistan Army Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi surrendered to the joint force of Mukti Bahini and Indian Army in this ground.
To commemorate the historic events of the Liberation War of Bangladesh, the Government of Bangladesh decided to restore the memories of the war and build the Swadhinata Stambha.
